We’re on Facebook

Much thanks to The Duplex Cartoons in today’s paper for the oh-so-appropriate image. Click here to visit their website. www.gocomics.com/.

It gives me much pleasure, with much trepidation, to announce that MoCoGenSo has just acquired a Page on Facebook! If you have a Facebook account, be sure to locate our new Page by searching for “Monterey County Genealogical Society”. You can help us “get famous” by Following the Page, or at least Liking it!

If you see any problems with the page, or have suggestions, be sure to contact me (Jim Robeson) directly. Meanwhile, you can click here to see the page now. to Facebook

Researching in Monterey County

We have started a project to help visitors do genealogical research in Monterey County. Since we started this project, we learned that there are many wonderful web sites and blogs already available with just about all the records the serious researcher needs without us adding to the heap. Google is using Artificial Intelligence now in their search algorithms and it shows. But, given our name, we sorta gotta provide something.…

Our Monterey County pointers can be found in the Menu under Genealogy. So far, all we have is a page of general sites and a page of cemetery locations. There is a special KMZ file for Google Earth users too. This is a “work in process” project. Expect changes for the next few months.

Jump to the general page by clicking here
and for Monterey County cemeteries click here.

If you see errors or omissions, please contact Jim Robeson (see the About/Webmaster page).

Using this website

Once in a while, we will remind you of how this website works by highlighting some new or updated item. Today we updated the page that contains our list of Web Links, a page where you can find pointers to some of the better web sites as they relate to genealogy and genetics.

A post like this goes to the top of the ‘Home‘ page, which you see when you first come here. New posts are added to the top, older posts move down. Then they go into the ‘archives’ which are easily accessed by looking on the ‘sidebar’ (in the right column of this blog) at the ‘Archives’ or ‘Categories’ section. Archives and Categories are simply filters that pull from the posts according to your need.

This blog is a hybrid site that includes ‘pages‘, in addition to posts, which contain static information not listed by date that needs to be always available. Pages can be found in the Menu bar at the top of every screen or in the ‘Menu’ section of the sidebar.

Today, in preparation for the new DNA SIG tomorrow, we have added pointers to various DNA sites to the Links page.  You can find the newly updated Web Links, page by clicking on GENEALOGY in the Menu and then clicking on WEB LINKS.

And, as a reminder, the Membership Renewal form can be found in the Menu by going to BUSINESS and then MEMBERSHIP or by Clicking Here.

Have a good day!

An Introduction To Our New Website

Logo_100_93This is the new MoCoGenSo website built in the form of a blog. A blog (a truncation of the expression weblog) is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete entries (‘posts‘) typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first). (from Wikipedia)

Blogs usually have a few features that are useful to know if you want to get the most out of them as a reader.

A post like this one goes to the top of the front ‘Home‘ page. As more posts are added, this one will move down the page until it disappears. Then it goes into the ‘archives’ which are easily accessed by looking on the ‘sidebar’ (in the right column of this blog) at the ‘Archives’ or ‘Categories’ section. Archives and Categories are simply filters that pull from the posts according to your need.

This blog is a hybrid site that includes ‘pages‘, in addition to posts, which contain static information not listed by date that needs to be always available. Pages can be found in the Menu bar at the top of every screen or in the ‘Pages’ section of the sidebar. For example, you can find an article about the history of MoCoGenSo’s founding in a sub-menu of the About page.

Not all blogs use ‘comments‘, but most do. This blog is not a monologue but a conversation. You can give feedback on the various pages and posts here by clicking the ‘Leave A Reply’ link at found at either the top of a post or at the bottom of a page. This will take you to a form where you leave your name, email and a link to your own blog if you have one and then your feedback or comment.

Our initial plans are to post all meeting notices through the Home page so they will be available quickly to the busy reader. Post-meeting information, including handouts when available, will be stored in the Meeting pages section of this blog.

There is a widget in the sidebar titled Follow Blog Via Email that allows the reader to sign up to receive new posts by email. This is a really nice option as it sends you copies of new posts (not pages) as soon as they are created! It is our hope that everyone who is within driving distance of our meetings eventually begin to ‘follow us‘! I highly recommend this option, as it sends the full post, not just a link.

You can help us all learn more about this new tool, provided by WordPress, by using it and giving feedback via the Leave A Reply sections in posts and pages. Please report any issues through the link on the Webmaster page found in the menu bar.
