Monthly Meeting – Jan. 5, 2017: “How to Find Your American Civil War Ancestor”, by Shelley McFadden

The first meeting of the year always includes voting for the Board of Directors for the current year. Please come vote. And if you are interested in volunteering for an open position, speak up before the meeting so we can get you on the slate! When voting is complete, Shelley will then take the floor and talk about finding Civil War ancestors.

Ever wonder if one of your ancestors fought in the American Civil War from April 12, 1861 to May 10, 1965, ending with the capture of President Jefferson Davis. Most soldiers and sailors were men between the ages of 18 and 30, so they would have been born between 1831 and 1846. Some were as young as 10 or as old as 70, which widens the birth years to between 1791 and 1854. Did one your ancestors die between April 1861 and June 1865? Did he die in a Southern state or a different state than where his family was living? These might indicate that he died as a soldier in the Civil War. Learn more about finding you American Civil War Ancestor. Come learn about the travel routes used by our ancestors.

Shelley has been doing genealogy research for over 35 years. She is the 1st Vice President, and Program Chair for Monterey County Genealogy Society. She is also a speaker at the Ancestor Round-up Conference in January 21, 2017 in Seaside.

Doors open at 6:15 pm, the meeting starts at 7:00 pm. We’ll see you at the Family History Center, 1024 Noche Buena, Seaside, CA., left rear of building.
